International expertise
The winners of both prizes are selected by one and the same jury, whose members come from internationally renowned art museums and galleries. Nominations for the Possehl Prize for International Art are submitted by a six-member nomination committee with international art expertise. The external members of both juries change every three years.
Since 2018, the Possehl Prizes for Art have focussed on both local and international contemporary artists. This also promotes the Hanseatic City of Lübeck as a location of international calibre for the visual arts.
The Possehl Prize for International Art is a nomination-based process in which six directors or curators from international art institutions suggest artists for the prize in each selection round. Artists from Lübeck can apply for the Possehl Prize for Lübeck Art on their own initiative with a project idea. The winners of both art prizes are selected by the same jury, whose members belong to internationally renowned art museums and galleries. The external members of both juries change every three years. This model - where one and the same jury decides on both the local and the international award winners - offers Lübeck's artists a special opportunity to draw attention to their work beyond the city's borders.
