Possehl Prize for Lübeck Art 2021
NOIR MONTER
Heinke Both
The artist Heinke Both (*1964) blends painting, drawing, collage and photography in her work. She addresses fundamental questions about the individual and forms of depicting what cannot be seen in renditions of humanity. The Possehl Prize for Lübeck Art that she won in May 2021 enabled the artist to develop a new chapter in her body of work. In her NOIR MONTER exhibition in the Chain Store at Kulturwerft Gollan in 2022, Heinke Both presented the results of her prize-winning project, showing a series of lithographs that she developed in an experimental process in close collaboration with the artist and printer Lars Lundqvist, and which have been produced in Hamburg by the printing studio Sturm-Loeding.
This old printing method involves the use of large, heavy stone plates, which are demanding and time-consuming to work with, and so form a striking contrast to the speed we have become accustomed to in our highly digitised daily lives. As with an individual research project, the focus of our prizewinner’s endeavour was the dialogue between her artistic intentions and this traditional printing technique.
